Around my neck – heavy –
Like a serpent, to heed
the semi-fractured call
Of another broken symphony.

Nextroom nextroom nextroom nextroom
Patientpatientpatientpatient –
Be patient

Rhythmically slapping
Tapping tip tapping
Slapping and tapping
The rhythm of

At home
my daughter’s heart
beats softly
to the same rhythm.
I imagine how it would feel
To place my hand against
The soft skin of her chest
And feel it singing.

Instead I place my metal ear
Cold against a stranger’s breast
And eavesdrop on a foreign tune
I somehow recognise.
